The best way to understand what it is that is special about Deakin University is to read Deakin’s Strategic Plan (2.6MB). Every aspect of Deakin University’s activities is guided by its mission statement, its core commitments and its values as set out in the Strategic Plan which is entitled “Delivering Effective Partnerships”. Deakin’s mission statement provides that:
Deakin University aims to be a catalyst for positive change for the individuals and the communities it serves.
This will be achieved by ensuring that Deakin’s teaching, its research, its partnerships, its international programs and the services that support those activities are
- Relevant,
- Innovative and
- Responsive.
By pursuing these objectives, Deakin aspires to be recognised as Australia’s most progressive university.
Deakin has core commitments to:
Deakin University’s values are: excellence; academic freedom; collegiality; continuous improvement; ethical behaviour; accountability; and environmental responsibility.
Deakin has four Campuses: one in Melbourne (the Melbourne Campus at Burwood ), two in Geelong (the Geelong Waterfront Campus, which is the University’s ‘head office’, and the Geelong Campus at Waurn Ponds) and one in Warrnambool (the Warrnambool Campus).
Deakin is committed to providing flexible learning options through innovative teaching and delivery methods. In this, and other ways, Deakin provides opportunities, not only for school-leavers from metropolitan areas, but also for students from remote and isolated areas, international students, mature-age students and Indigenous Australian students to access the benefits of higher education. Many of our students enroll as ‘off campus’ students because of the flexibility this provides to them, allowing them to combine study, work and, in many cases, family commitments. Some 10,000 of our 35,000 students study ‘off campus’. There are more than 7,000 international students studying our courses in Australia and throughout the world.
We see the fact that Deakin has Campuses in rural and regional Victoria and in Melbourne as positive aspects of Deakin's character. The University is committed to working in partnership with rural and regional communities, particularly those in and around Geelong and Warrnambool, to make its teaching and research relevant and responsive to the needs of those communities.
Deakin’s goal in teaching is to work in partnership with students, staff, industry, employers and governments to ensure that Deakin’s academic programs are of high quality, relevant, informed by contemporary research and create a unique Deakin student experience.
By 2012, Deakin aims to have improved its research performance so that it is in the top third of the Australian higher education sector.
Deakin is committed to having a workplace culture which fosters and supports excellence.
The staff of Deakin University are responsible for its success. Their dedication to our students, to the research we conduct and to the communities we serve, will ensure the continued success of Deakin University.
